Frequently asked questions
Will Distilla delete my photos automatically?
No. Every release is confirmed by you. Distilla uses iOS's standard deletion flow, so iOS itself shows you a confirmation prompt and the photos go to your Recently Deleted album, where you can recover them for 30 days.
Does it work with iCloud Photos?
Yes. Distilla works with whatever photo library you have, including iCloud-synced libraries. iCloud sync is handled by iOS itself.
I gave the wrong permission. How do I change it?
Open the iOS Settings app → Privacy & Security → Photos → Distilla, and grant Full Access. Distilla needs full access to read your library and delete photos you choose to release.
Why don't I see all of my photos in a session?
Distilla picks dense days — days with many photos and videos — to keep sessions focused and meaningful. You'll see different days each session, working through your library a piece at a time.
Why did Distilla group some photos together?
Visually similar photos (the same scene shot multiple times, burst shots, etc.) are grouped using Apple's on-device Vision framework. Pick the one that captures the moment best — the rest will be marked for release together.
Are my photos and decisions private?
Yes. Everything happens on your device. Your photos, videos, and decisions are never sent anywhere. See our privacy policy for the full breakdown.
What devices does Distilla support?
iPhone running iOS 17 or newer.
How do I delete my data?
Uninstall the app. All Distilla-related data (decisions, stats, cached thumbnails) is stored only on your device and is removed with the app. Photos that you've already released through the standard iOS deletion flow live in your Recently Deleted album for 30 days and can be restored from there.
I found a bug. What should I include?
Write to hello@distilla.app with:
- iPhone model and iOS version
- Distilla version (Settings tab → bottom of the screen)
- What you were doing when it happened
- What you expected vs. what actually happened
